MLS 2020: Week 2 Preview

This week's schedule is below, with items of note for some of the key games. Numbers in parenthesis are win probabilities per FiveThirtyEight (https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/soccer-predictions/mls/).

Saturday

New England (47%) vs Chicago (30%) - 1:30

Real Salt Lake (50%) vs NY Red Bulls (24%) - 2:00

RSL generated almost no offensive opportunities against Orlando City, with the fewest shots in the league in week one. Red Bulls struggled defensively against Cincinnati, but I'd expect them to come away with at least a draw at home.

FC Dallas (62%) vs Montreal (17%) - 3:00

Dallas was extremely strong defensively against Philadelphia, keeping the Union from generating quality opportunities. Montreal took advantage of their limited chances against New England, but I expect to see Dallas continue their strong performance and shut down those chances.

DC United (42%) vs Inter Miami (33%) - 3:30 - Univision/Twitter

DC struggled to generate quality chances against Colorado. Ideally, we'll see some adjustments to the lineup from Ben Olsen to generate better spacing among his front-line.

Toronto (53%) vs NYCFC (24%) - 5:00

Atlanta (83%) vs Cincinnati (5%) - 7:00

Atlanta still has plenty of talent and I expect them to come away with this one, but their win probability is likely inflated due to the injury to Josef Martinez. In fact, this is the only game where Caesar Palace's implied odds are dramatically different from this win probability; that's likely due to Caesar Palace having the injury factored in.

San Jose (51%) vs Minnesota (26%) - 8:00

This is an interesting match-up of styles based on week one; San Jose controlled possession while Minnesota used the counter-attack to generate opportunities. I disagree with the win probabilities on this one - I anticipate Minnesota's strong defense to limit San Jose's chances.

Sporting KC (56%) vs Houston (23%) - 8:30

Colorado (57%) vs Orlando City (22%) - 9:00

LA Galaxy (78%) vs Vancouver (9%) - 10:00

I expect the Galaxy to win this one comfortably, but the thing I'll be interested to follow is if they can get Chicharito more touches in dangerous areas while doing so.

Seattle (58%) vs Columbus (19%) - 10:00

Sunday

Portland (67%) vs Nashville (13%) - 7:00 - ESPN

LAFC (63%) vs Philadelphia (18%) - 10:30 - FS1
